Cited as "one of thrash metal's most exciting young bands" and "clearly a band to watch out for," Pittsburgh melodic thrash metallers Crown the Lost return with their third album, Cold Pestilent Hope, the follow-up to 2009's critically-acclaimed Blind Faith Loyalty.
Recorded during various portions of 2010 with producer/engineer Dave Watson (Hero Destroyed, Mantic Ritual), Cold Pestilent Hope sees Crown the Lost refine their sound for a more direct attack, one that now relies heavily on the vocal acrobatics of new singer Leon Mallah. Having joined the band in January of 2010, Mallah's multi-dimensional vocal approach quickly breathed new life into the band's sound, becoming the focus on songs like "Breathe Into Emptiness," "Eyes Without Sight," and "Cold Pestilent Hope." A converted guitar player, Mallah’s quick transformation into a lead singer is one of the defining traits of the new album, and is something the band looks to build upon going forward.
The new rhythm section of bassist Timothy Boyle and drummer Argel Marchelletta also lent to Cold Pestilent Hope's song-oriented, yet no-less elaborate approach. In place of once over-the-top and technical drumming is a rock-solid groove and tight rhythmic foundation, something that is readily apparent on “Separate Blood From Waste,” “In Defiance of Sanctity” and “Consumed.”
Formed in April of 2005 by guitarist David E. Gehlke, Crown the Lost reached the five-year mark with a host of line-up changes in tow, but along with lead guitarist Joe Bonaddio (who has been with CTL since late 2005), the band is at its most stable and vital, a direct reflection of how strong Cold Pestilent Hope is. Crown the Lost will be hitting the road in full-force in 2011 in support of Cold Pestilent Hope.
